People ask, "Why do you spend so much time playing with these kids?" There are so many things I could say-- but the answer is-- because it's more than a game.
I sort through piles of old equipment looking for a bat that still has some hit left in it, a ball that still has a few shots to be taken. Working with worlds of different skills I seek to improve without dispiriting, to show a better way without losing their enthusiasm or joy.
Because it's more than a game... I utilize my own resources and provide opportunity they have no other way to know. I spend my time generously-- I know attention is the best gift I can give. I teach team at the same time as I inspire individual strength. I celebrate the ball out of the park and the buzzer beater as sincerely as the courage to pick up a bat or ball. It's the same thing!
I may leave the game but I will always be a coach. I work so hard... because it's more than a game. It's a way of drawing out talent and inviting visions for the bigger fields and courts of their days.
