Bodily-Kinesthetic Activities Offer New Learning Opportunities

| This
week eighth graders participated in several bodily-kinesthetic
learning activities as part of our study of our federal government.
Bodily-kinesthetic learning incorporates the use of hand coordination
and movement around the
classroom during learning activities. The kids took part in a number of
learning experiences that incorporated physical activity including
charades, musical chairs and a "President Hoops" basketball game
created by Ryan Dalton, Jake Strange, and James Doran (shown below)

Students Create Learning Center
Jordan quizes his teammates as other students take advantage of learning tools at other stations.
Civics
students just completed a Civil Rights unit that climaxed with the
students using a learning center filled with projects that the students
produced. All eighth graders took tests designed to identify their
multiple intelligence learning preferences. They were divided into
learning teams based on their results. This brain-based activity
produced a variety of learning tools including learning cubes, puzzles,
learning pyramids, flash cards, crossword puzzles, board games, poems,
songs, power points, skits, and a radio show webcast.
With
student learning teams producing projects based on their personal
strengths, the quality of the product was higher than normal. In
addition, the unit test that followed showed improved test scores!
