The Fitnessgam Physical Fitness
Assessment, for children in grades 1 through 12, is a
well-established leader in youth fitness field. The program
is much more than an assessment of health-related physical
fitness. Children and youth that participate in this test
receive personalized performance reports. They are also
given valuable feedback on ways to establish positive
exercise behavior geared to improving their level of
fitness.
Fitnessgram measures aerobic
capacity; body composition; and muscle strength, endurance
and flexibility. Instead of using percentile norms to
evaluate performance, Fitnessgram uses objective criterion
standards representing healthy fitness levels.
Criterion-referenced standards are presented in two levels,
Good and Better, that fall within the Healthy Fitness Zone.
A performance below the Good standard is classified as
falling into the Needs Improvement Zone. Scores above Better
are acknowledged, but not viewed essential. Fitnessgram is
endorsed by the American Alliance for Health, Physical
Education, Recreation and Dance.
The Cooper Institute for Aerobics
Research developed Fitnessgram. Fitnessgram recognizes that
educating students about physical fitness, with an emphasis
on the continuing benefits of exercising throughout life, is
the most important objective of a testing
program.
During the school year the
Fitnessgram components were explained and discussed to help
your child understand the better quality of life he or she
can attain through adopting good health and fitness habits
now. During the testing, your child was encouraged to work
hard to do their very best, to accept their results and not
compare them to others, and to continue to try improving
their scores. These tests are given twice a year in the Fall
and in the Spring.
Your child's health and fitness
maintenance needs your support. I encourage you to take part
in Fitnessgram with your child whenever possible.
