November Newsletter

Dear Parents,

During the construction project on 148th Street and Amberly Road we have seen an increase in traffic on Castlewood St. (in front of Hamlow), 148th Street, and on Heywood Street (in front of Waverly Intermediate). I encourage you to drive cautiously and keep and extra eye out for children, crossing guards, and buses. I would encourage parents or high school students traveling to the MS or HS to use alternate routes to decrease traffic flow on Castlewood Street and Heywood Street.

Reading & Walking Clubs
We have had a tremendous response from students involved in both the Hamlow Reading Club and the Intermediate Walking Club. The Reading Club averages between 40 & 50 students in the morning with additional bus students during the afternoon recess. Approximately 90-95% of the Intermediate students participate in the Walking Club. Students at both buildings earn prizes and get entered in monthly drawings. Thank you for your support!

Energy Drinks & Pop
There is a rise of popularity across the state and nation with so-called energy drinks. This is a serious concern as many of our students are bringing energy drinks to school. Some are drinking them before school, at lunch, and then again after school. Energy drinks contain very high amounts of sugar and caffeine. Studies have found that caffeine increases heart rate. Over consumption of caffeine can also lead to nervousness, irritability, and insomnia. Additional researchers have shown that consuming large quantities of sugar is likely to cause weight gain.

Many people are not aware of these risks. There have been reports across the nation of students being hospitalized after drinking energy drinks for shortness of breath, sweating and racing heart rates. I encourage you to not send energy drinks or pop to school with your students. A mission of District 145 Waverly Public Schools is to provide curriculum, instruction, and experiences in a health-promoting school environment to instill habits of lifelong learning and health (Policy #5049).

Changing Weather
Winter weather conditions are on the way. We have had a large number of students in shorts, without coats, and not prepared for below freezing temperatures. Please send hats, coats, and gloves to school. If you are missing any of the above items, please check our lost and found in each building.
