Center time is a time for students to:

    *strenghten skills/concepts learned in class,
*learn how to solve problems independently and cooperatively,
*develop responsiblilty for their learning, as well as class materials/supplies.

It may sound like play, and it is.  5 and 6 year olds learn best through play.  It gives them the opportunity to make their own choices and feel responsible for their own learning!

We do a plan-do-review center approach.  At the beginning of center time they get a plan sheet.  They circle the day of the week and put their name on the top.  Then they choose two of the four centers.  At the beginning of the year they color their first center choice green (for go) and their second center choice red (for stop).  Once we begin number writing, they write the numbers 1 and 2 for their choices.  Once center time is over, they clean up and return to their seats.  They turn their plan sheet over to the back and draw a picture of one thing they explored.  ( We base our centers on the letter that we are studying.  Everything in the centers begins with the same letter!)  Once they have finished their picture, my T.A. and I go around and ask them what they explored.  We then write that on the line and underline the letter of the week.  As the year progresses, they will write their own sentence on the line.
