Algebra 1-2

Algebra 1-2                                                             2008-2009

*What we’ll be doing:

  • Algebra basics
  • Properties of real numbers
  • Solving and graphing linear equations
  • Solving and graphing linear inequalities
  • Rules of Exponents
  • Functions
  • Assessing basic skills designated by the State Department of Education
*Your grade will be determined by the following:
  • Diagnostic Assessments--This is to find out what you know, to explore strengths and weaknesses, and to check for understanding. This will count 0% in the overall grade.  Examples: homework, board work, activities in class, discussions
  • Formative Assessments--This is to find out how well you understand a particular concept. This is considered a practice and progress phase and the mean (average) of all scores will count for 20% of the overall grade.  Examples:  homework quizzes, quizzes, performance assessments
  • Summative Assessments--This is the formal assessment after you have received instruction, have practiced, and have had feedback with opportunities for reteaching. This assessment demonstrates what you know and can do; the median score will count for 80% of the overall grade.  Examples:  tests, performance assessments

*As seen above, homework papers are not counted in the final grade, although you will be expected to correct your own homework from a projected answer key or answers read aloud. Some problems may be checked from student solutions presented at the board or on the overhead.  You will get immediate feedback from me as we go over any questions from the assignments.

*Homework quizzes will occur almost daily; problems are similar to the homework assignments and problems practiced in class.

*Retakes are possible under two conditions:
    1.  The retake is done on your own time outside of class
    2.  The retake is done within five school days after return of the assessment
    3.  You make an appointment with me to go over the assessment, work problems, and show me that you have taken measurements to learn the material, at least one day before taking the retake.

*What you need to bring every day to class:
  • Algebra book
  • A spiral notebook specifically for this class
  • A scientific calculator
  • Pencil—no pens!

*Rules & Expectations:
  • Come to class prepared--see above
  • Participate in discussions, class practice, and activities
  • Do your work.  Use class time and do homework--no more than 15 minutes per night.
  • Listen when given instructions and during lectures
  • Get drinks and use the restroom between classes
