  • Sharing our writings with each other
  • Learning vocabulary
  • Journaling to express ourselves, to reflect, and to gain ideas for writing pieces
  • Reading a variety of genres, centered around student choice and participating in literature circles
  • Assessing basic skills designated by the State Department of Education
  • Daily Oral Language (DOL)--Mini grammar lessons
  • Exploring techniques for improving writing in six areas:
    • Ideas
    • Organization
    • Word Choice
    • Voice
    • Sentence Fluency
    • Conventions

Rebecca:
A student performing a song that she wrote
for a contest in English class.

Your grade will be based on the following:

  • Final Papers--50%
  • Journals--20%
  • Reading/Literature circles participation and projects--10%
  • Self Assessment and genre exploration--10%
  • Response Groups Participation--5%
  • State assessments
  • Vocabulary projects & quizzes
  • Other miscellaneous assignments
*I do not average quarters to get a semester grade—your grade is a running total; think of your quarter grade as a progress report for the semester.

What you need to bring every day to class:

  • Journal—a notebook solely for journaling and nothing else!
  • Choice Book
  • Another notebook for notes and other misc. writing (this can include other classes).
  • Writing utensils—both pen (either black or blue only) and pencil

Rules and Expectations:
  • Come to class prepared
  • Participate in discussions and activities
  • Do your work—use class time and do occasional homework
  • Listen when given instructions and during lectures
  • Use computer lab time to do English work, not to play games, listen to music or surf the Internet unless given permission
  • Read outside of class
  • Get drinks and use the restroom between classes

DO NOT THROW ANYTHING AWAY.  DO NOT DELETE ANY WRITING FILES.  You will need these at the end of the year.

**Plagiarism
results in having to write another paper while forfeiting the opportunity for feedback with the "pre-final," getting a phone call home, and getting a discipline referral.

Tardy Policy:    One free tardy.  Next tardy = 15-minute detention.
