Reading

Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) is a period where student and teachers read for pleasure.

Rules for SSR period:

1.    All students and teachers will participate in SSR every day for 19 minutes.  This is a time for everyone to read books for pleasure.
2.    Each day students and teachers are expected to have a book to read.  Students who do not have something to read when the first bell rings will be given something to read by the teacher.
3.    On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays students must read a book.
4.    On Tuesdays and Thursdays students can read a book, a magazine, or the newspaper.  Magazines must be brought from home; the library will not check out for SSR time.
5.    On a typical reading day, these rules will be followed:
•    When the bell rings students are seated with a book to read.
•    No computers or headphones are allowed.
•    Students may not work on homework.  Reading a textbook is okay, but no writing notes.
•    Students may not leave the room.  NO PASSES are allowed—not even to the library.
6.  Students read to the end bell, except the last five minutes on Fridays when the option of informally sharing information about the books they are reading is available.
