Floor Plan
Mrs. Bowker
English 10 –Floor Plan
Directions:
1. Draw a “level” of a house or apartment or wherever you have
lived where you have several memories. Draw all the
details—furniture, appliances, where pictures hang, your bed,
etc. If you’d like, you may draw all levels of the house.
It may be a relative’s house as well, just somewhere where there are
several memories. Then number spots on the floor plan where
particular memories occurred. You may use the yard, neighborhood,
street, swimming pool or park—any surrounding areas are fine!
Shoot for at least 10 spots.
2. Once you have numbered all of the spots, list them on your paper with a short explanation like mine below:
On my floor plan, the following events happened:
• #1 is an event that I will reveal to you later in the semester through a story that I wrote.
• #2 is where, when growing up, our family Christmas
tree was always placed and where we had a particular tradition of
decorating the tree.
• #3 is where I fell through the stairs when our
house was being built. I landed on the cement below the stairs.
• #4 is where I had an argument and struggle with my best friend, Jackie.
• #5 is where I found out from my cousin, Josie, that Santa Claus didn’t exist anymore.
• #6 is where my cousin, Lisa, and I got into trouble for “goofing around” at the dinner table.
• #7 is where my best friend, Jackie, and I would
pretend to be policemen to scare drivers driving too fast down Fourth
Street.
• #8 is an event that I will reveal to you later in the semester through a story that I wrote.
• #9 is where my sister got angry with me and went after me with a baseball bat and put a hole in the door.
• #10 is where I have a memory but can’t remember if
it really happened or if it was just a dream. I asked my dad if
he remembered doing it and he said no. The memory is that I
brought my dad into the bathroom and shut the door to save us from the
kittens in a poster on the wall in my bedroom.
3. Choose ONE that you think you can elaborate on the most and
write on it in your notebook. Title it “Floor Plan.”
Explain details: Who was involved? Where and when did it
occur? Describe the surroundings. What did people say
(dialogue)? Basically, apply your “Showing, Not Telling”
strategies!
