Hotspots

Hot spots:  A hotspot is a phrase, a quote, or a sentence that captures your attention.  It might have good imagery; it might be a profound statement; it might be funny, sad, or remind you of something in your life.  Use hotspots as a springboard to other writing. A hotspot could be as short as one word but should be no longer than a couple of sentences.

Places to do find hotspots:
•    Journals
•    Literature
•    Own writing pieces
•    Other student writing
•    Newspaper articles

What to do:
•    Read several pieces of writing, being cognizant of "hot spots."
•    When you find a "hot spot," write it down in your notebook.  Have a list of at least ten.
•    Once you have at least ten, read through all of them.
•    Choose one that seems to have the most potential, and circle it on your list.
•    Write a poem, a work of non-fiction, a work of fiction, or a drama, using the "hot spot" as the inspiration for your writing.  The piece you create does not have to have anything to do with the original piece of writing.
