WELCOME!!!!
Congratulations for making the choice to continue being a part of the
Waverly Band Program. You have given yourself the opportunity to
belong to an excellent organization, as well as being one of the
leaders in Waverly High School. You will be able to continue to
develop your many musical talents and skills as you participate in the
band and its activities during the year. It will take time,
effort, and focus on your part, but you will reap the rewards.
The following information is given to answer some of the most
frequently asked questions about band during your 9th grade year.
Above all, enjoy your band experience. I am here to assist you in
developing your musical potential and I look forward to a great year
with all of you!

Overview of the Waverly 9th Grade Band Program
PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of the Waverly High School music
program is to provide an opportunity for creativity and self-expression
through the study of music and musical performance. Each student
is given the opportunity to develop his aesthetic potential as well as
his appreciation and enjoyment for music to the highest possible level
through expressive experiences with music.
OBJECTIVES
Participating in the Waverly Schools’ music programs will give the student learners opportunities for:
1. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
2. Reading and notating music.
3. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
4. Evaluating music and music performances.
5. Understanding music in relation to history and culture, as well as
the connection of music to the other arts, and other disciplines
outside the arts.
6. Improvising, composing, and arranging music.
Waverly 9th Grade Band Performance Opportunities
All 9th grade band members are a part of
1. Concert Band (All year)
2. Pep Band (during Volley Ball & Basketball Season)
3. Small group ensembles and solo opportunities
4. Elkhorn Band Olympics (optional)
5. Local Music Contest (optional)
6. District Music Contest (by audition)
In all performance groups and solo and small ensembles the objectives will be to develop:
1. Musicianship skills
2. Instrumental tone and technique
3. Music-reading skills
4. Pitch-discrimination skill
5. Sight-reading skills
6. Public performance skills
7. A system of proper care for instrumental maintenance
8. Ability to identify musical symbols, notation, and to develop a musical vocabulary
9. An enjoyment of performing and creating MUSIC
10. An appreciation of various styles of MUSIC
We have read the guidelines for grading, classroom
behavior, and concert dates. We understand that attendance at
concerts is mandatory. Excused absences shall only be for illness
of the student or a family emergency. (This does not include
social functions.) Such excuses must be in advance, in writing,
or by telephone if emergency dictates. We agree to abide by
the classroom and grading guidelines.

9th Grade Band Grading Criteria
The 9th Grade Band members will be graded on the following criteria:
15% Participation
15% Posture/Attitude/Effort
25% Music playing and preparation
35% Performance
A Final Exam will be given at the conclusion of each semester. The final exam will be worth 10% of the semester grade.

WAVERLY 9TH GRADE BAND REHEARSAL GUIDELINES
1. It is important that band members be in their seats with instruments and music
immediately following the tardy bell. You will be marked tardy if
you are not ready to play two minutes after the tardy bell rings.
2. Gum Chewing is not permitted.
3. Students are expected to have a pencil in their folder at all times.
4. Each student is responsible for taking proper care of the music in
his or her folder. Failure to do so will result in the student
paying a replacement cost. (The average cost for a piece of band
music is $60.00.) Music must be stored in folders.
5. Students are encouraged to take instruments home on weekends and
holiday periods for individual practice. Students are encouraged
to play as much as possible outside of class and may take their
instruments home on a daily basis if they choose to do so.
6. Maintain good posture and instrument position at all times.
7. Instruments and equipment are to be stored only in designated areas.
8. Please do not hesitate to ask for help.
9. Students will be dismissed by the teacher rather than the bell at the end of the period.
10. Strives to improve individual playing abilities.
11. Makes a positive contribution to band.
