THE PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS
If you made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1000 and a fabulous trip to Washington D.C. next May by applying for these awards.  It's easy to apply:

1) Visit www.prudential.com/spirit, click on the application link, and follow the on-screen instructions.  When asked for the access key, type the word spirit
2) Once you have completed your online application, print it out, sign it, and have a parent sign it. 
3) Submit your printed application to Mr. Boitnott.  A school committee will then select one or more local honorees and nominate one for state-level judging.  

APPLICATION DEADLINE: October 31st, 2008


CIVIL AIR PATROL'S OPEN HOUSE
"America's best kept secret," this organization provides opportunities from leadership development to emergency services training to academic scholarships.  The four major areas of their operation are corporation, emergency services, cadet programs, and aerospace education.  You are invited to their open house on Monday September 29th at 7 p.m. in the Dining Hall at the Nebraska Air National Guard Base in Lincoln.  If you have any questions regarding this activity or the unit, please contact Soni Cochran at 441-6745. 

HEARST FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
104 Students will be selected for a week-long government and leadership education program in the Nation's Capital and a one-time $5000 college scholarship. 
TO QUALIFY: junior or senior WHO IS OR HAS BEEN a student council officer, class council member, etc and permanent resident of the United States.    See Mr. Boitnott for Details by Friday, September 26th. 


NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY ACT PREP SHOP:  
This  prep shop is designed to provide students with the techniques and skills needed to be successful in taking the ACT exam.  This $35 prep shop will be help on Saturday, September 27th in Room 111 of the Valk Agriculture Center from 9 am to 3 pm with check-in starting at 8:30 am.  Students are responsible for their own lunch and will be given a one-hour lunch break. 

Students should also bring a calculator with them. 

See Mr. Boitnott to register.  The registration form and $35 need to be to Mr. Boitnott by 4 pm on Monday, September 15th. 


CREIGHTON CENTER FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACT TEST PREP:
This program is designed to deliver a high quality option that will engage juniors and seniors in an intense preparation.  Students will receive 16 hours of exam content instruction in the disciplines of English, math, science, and reading comprehension.  This prep course is offered on consecutive weekends beginning on September 27th and September 28th and ending on October 4th and October 5th. 

Each student will receive a textbook with extensive home study materials for all four-subject areas.  Tuition--with all materials--is $389.  This preparation program is ideal for students taking the October 25th exam.  Students can register online at http://cpd.creighton.edu


THINK NEBRASKA SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Student and parents interested in a program dedicated to rigorous coursework in high school (and the positive effects that such a path has on students when they go to college and/or the workforce) can learn more about the program at http://www.thinknebraska.org

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM
Students who are 15 to 18 and 1/2 years old can apply to this exchange program by picking up an application from Mr. Boitnott


WALK TO PREVENT SUICIDE

On Saturday, September 20th , 2008 The American Foundation for Suicide PRevention will host its 1st annual Out of the Darkness walk at Chautauqua Park in Beatrice.  A major goal of this event is raise awareness for suicide prevention  research and education programs.  You can register online at www.outofthedarkness.org For more information call Melissa Carlson at 402-239-0787. 

LINCOLN ELECTRICAL JOINT APPRENTICESHIP AND TRAINING COMMITTEE

The Lincoln Electrical JATC accepts applications on a year round basis for its electrical apprenticeship programs.  Applications for Commerical & Industrial (Inside Electrician) and Telecommunications apprenticeship can be filled out on any working Tuesdays from 8 am until 5 pm.  The Telecommuncation apprenticeship is a 3 yar program with a minimum of 160 hours of classroom instrurction each year as well as completing at least 4800 hours of on-the-job training.  Duties include installation of computer networking, telephone systems, nurse call stations, fire alarms, and numerous other low voltage electrical devices.  

 QUALIFICATIONS: Must be 17 years of age to appy, 18 years of age to interview, have high school diploma or GED, one year of high school algebra with a passing grade, take Electrical Trades Aptitude test receiving a 5 or higher, and physical exam and drug testing upon slection.

U.S.SERVICE ACADEMIES

You can apply for the U.S. Military, Naval, Air Force, and Merchant Marine Academies between the spring of your junior year and the fall of your senior year.  See Mr. Boitnott for details about eligibility and nomination requirements.  Applications need to be reviewed by are Mr. Boitnott by October 10th and sent to Congressman Fortenberry's office by October 15th OR to Senator Nelson's office by Friday, October 31st 2008.
