COUNSELING CURRICULUM & VOCATIONAL NOTEBOOKS
Sophomores should continue to update the participation section of their notebooks.  Keeping track of your present activities, awards, employment, and community service will be important in preparing you for college applications and scholarships during your senior year.  This year with your counselors you will:
1) Complete a CAREER SEARCH WITH PERSON MATCH activity
2) Complete a SUPER WORK VALUES ACTIVITY
3)Review your transcript, complete a credit check, register for your junior year, and plan for your senior year
4) Take the PLAN Test and review results
5) Enter the Career Connections system and its offerings
6) Learn about College Fair opportunities, letters of recommendation, NCAA, Student Opportunities,  graduation requirements, making a college choice, and college testing and entrance information
7) Review this entire website with your counselors

VOCATIONAL NOTEBOOKS CAN BE ACCESSED THROUGH THE HIGH SCHOOL MEDIA CENTER.  NOTEBOOKS CAN BE CHECKED OUT BY STUDENTS AND VIEWED BY PARENTS AT PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES.

NEBRASKA CAREER CONNECTIONS amp;
Sophomores should use NEBRASKA CAREER CONNECTIONS to find an occupation that best matches their strengths, interests, and post-secondary possibilities.  The system offers information for more than a thousand occupations, provides career cluster information, and connects users with all Nebraska colleges, universities, training programs, etc.  NCC also allows students to have almost every college/university and training program in the country at their fingertips.  Click on "Options After High School" and make direct connections with opportunties in all 50 states.

Sophomores will complete a Career Search and a Work Values activity this year..  These activities will give students some occupations to consider based on their preferences, likes and dislikes, personal values, etc.  Sophomores should be continually looking for possibilities for the future. .

LINCOLN AREA COLLEGE FAIR:
Please do not miss this opportunity to meet with representatives of your choice from over 100 colleges.  Every college and university in Nebraska--and some from other states--will be represented at this fair, which will take place on the Southeast Community College campus in Lincoln (8800 O Street) from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 19th.  Attendance is free and open to the public.

OTHER LINKS UNDER "MY PAGES" TO USE:
*The RECOMMENDATION LETTER link will be of assistance when students need a letter of recommendation.  This form can be filled out and given to a teacher, employer, etc. to help him or her write a thorough letter of recommendation.  If you ask one of the counselors to write you a letter, he or she will require this form and at least one-week's notice.

*The STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES link provides great leadership-building and resume-building opportunties, some of which provide award and scholarship opportunties.  Look closely to see what is available to sophomores.

*The TESTING AND ENTRANCE INFORMATION link will provide you information about the different career and college testing opportunities at Waverly High School and elsewhere as well as inform you about the different tests used by colleges when considering applicants.

*MAKING A COLLEGE CHOICE can be difficult.  This link will provide you a list of questions to consider during the process.

*The NCAA-CLEARINGHOUSE link is for students considering college athletics at the Division I or Division II level.

*Use the GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS link to ensure that you are gaining the credits that you need to graduate and to know what course-track your counselors recommend to best prepare you for college.

SOPHOMORES & THE PLAN TEST

All sophomores will take the PLAN Test on Wednesday, October 15th.  Students will receive their PLAN results and an interpretation of those results in December.  We ask students to put one copy of their results in their vocational notebook and to bring one copy to their parents/guardians.

The following is information about that test and what it will provide parent/guardians and students:

1
) What is the PLAN Test?
*A practice ACT
*An indicator of
-your performance in comparison with other test-takers
-Academic performance & areas of needed growth
    -High School course plan recommendations
    -College readiness
    -Career possibilities

2) What the PLAN Test is not
*The test is not telling what you HAVE TO do or HAVE TO be.
*It is only information from one test on one day.
*The PLAN does not say you are a good student or a bad student, or that you cant go to college, or that you have to be in a certain career.
*There is more to success than a test.  Other factors are important to success:
        -Character
        -Effort
        -Attendance
        -Organization
        -Studying
        -Maturity
        -Involvement
        -Etc.

3) PLAN and ACT Tests
*Score report gives your estimated ACT Composite Score Range.  (Students should take the ACT in the summer of their junior year)
*Why is the ACT important?
-ACT is used for college entrance to most colleges and universities
-Higher scores lead to additional financial aid possibilities (i.e.scholarships)
-Admission Standards may include a ACT composite score requirement (i.e. UNL--20)

4) Comparison
The PLAN is a norm reference test which compares an individuals scores to all 10th graders who took the test throughout the nation and to all 10th graders who indicate they plan to go to college.
Percentages are used to show how many students scored at or below your score (i.e. a composite score of 18 indicates that the student scored equal to or better than 64% of the students taking the PLAN)

5) Academic Performance
*The PLAN will give a student a gauge of his or her present academic knowledge.
*In THE SKILLS section (the back) the PLAN will tell your answer and the correct answer to every question that was asked.  (PLEASE USE THE PLAN BOOKLET TO REVIEW)
*Suggestions to improve your skills are also provided.

6) High School Course Plans
*PLAN recommends the number of courses in each subject area that you should take based on your scores.  The recommendations for you are compared to The Core (what colleges expect you to take in high school).

7) College Readiness
PLAN will tell you if your scores are BELOW, AT, or ABOVE what research indicates will lead to success with first-year college courses.

8) Career Possibilities
PLAN provides some possible careers to consider based on your scores and indicated likes and dislikes.
Follow the steps to further explore careers.  Use the booklet and the website.
