Guidance Terms and Acknowledgements
GUIDANCE TERMS
CREDIT: Credit is given for a student who successfully passes a class according to the attendance policy and percentage grade. Generally, a course that meets five times per week provides 5 credits for one semester.
CURRICULUM: A course of study designed to fill the needs of the student. Examples include Business Education or College Preparatory curriculum.
REQUIRED COURSES: Specific courses required for graduation from WHS. These courses are found in the areas of English, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, and fine arts.
ELECTIVE COURSES: Course above and beyond those required for graduation.
PERMISSION: A student must acquire permission to enter certain courses, such as Advanced Scholars and Distance Learning Psychology and Sociology. Permission must be granted in this case by a counselor, principal, and parent. Forms are presented to students and parents at registration time.
PREREQUISITE: A previous or preliminary condition or course required before taking the next course. Example: Algebra 1/2 is a prerequisite to geometry and Algebra 3/4.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT: The English, math, science, and social studies departments each offer an Advanced Placement course which can provide college credit based upon successful completion of an AP exam given in May. Students can choose to take AP English and AP calculus for dual credit (both high school and college credit) through the Wesleyan Honors Academy. Students can still choose to take the class for high school credit only by opting out of the college credit and tuition payment. Information related to these dual credit options will be shared with students and parents at registration time.
