Assistance Programs
ACADEMIC & OTHER ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS
Academic assistance is available for students who request it at WHS.
Students have the following options:
1) Meeting with teacher for that particular class
*Teachers are available from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and
Thursday mornings (and sometimes on other weekdays) to assist students
with academics. NOTE: ARRANGEMENTS MUST BE MADE WITH INDIVIDUAL
TEACHERS PRIOR TO RECEIVING ASSISTANCE. Students who receive approval
can sign in with Mrs. Landon in the commons in order to be allowed into
the pods from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m.
2) Student tutors
*National Honor Society tutors are available in the library from
8:00 to 8:30 a.m. ALMOST every morning. Tutors are schedule for one
week at a time. Each week different tutors will be present. Students
who receive approval from a counselor can sign in with Mrs. Landon in the commons in
order to be allowed into the library for tutoring from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m.
*Team Tutoring is available to 9th grade students during their team lab time. Tutors will be assigned by the team teachers to the students with the most need first. Contact team leaders Dan Jensen (team 1000) or Christy Scott (2000) to request this team-time service.
NOTE:
Some additional ongoing one-on-one tutors MAY be available if needed.
Contact Mr. Boitnott if option 1 and option 2 have not been
successful.
3) Other tutoring opportunities
*Some outside tutors are available and generally are paid positions.
Please contact Mr. Boitnott to learn more about these options. Waverly
High School does not have a partnership with any tutoring organizations
or individuals and is not responsible for the actions or results of
such tutoring.
4) SAP (Student Assistance Programs)
*Students
who are in need of academic, organizational, and/or behavioral
interventions MAY be referred for one of the following SAP services.
Contact a counselor to begin the process and to find out which
service(s) may be beneficial for the individual.
*SAT-Student Assistance Team (composed of a counselor, teachers, parents/guardians, the student, and possibly an administrator) --academic and/or organizational concerns
*SCIP-School/Community Intervention Program (Not all services are free) --behavioral and/or alcohol/drug concerns
*Nebraska Mental Health Center Services (Not all services are free) --groups, assessment, therapy options for mental health needs
*Reading Focus--During SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) daily --reading decoding, comprehension, and fluency concerns
*Response Team--A district-wide crisis intervention team will respond to incidents that negatively affect a school or the district as a whole following specific guidelines and procedures
*New Student Sponsors--Volunteer teachers monitor new students to the district by providing them educational and social support
*Viking Support--Material Needs--Please contact a counselor
*Alternative Education--the LIFE Program Some students who are credit deficient, have major medical concerns, or are continually unsuccessful in traditional educational settings may apply for alternative education. This alternative is for a very small number of students. NOTE: This process involves an application, an interview, and many acceptance requirements. The program includes computer-based learning, employment and transportation requirements, and in-session involvement. The LIFE program is located in the Alternative Education building near the intermediate school. *Student Mentoring is available for some elementary students through the high school counseling office and National Honor Society
