Southeast Community College, ESU 6, & Waverly High School
Career Academy Partnership
Junior or Senior

What is the Career Academy partnership?
Area high schools, including Waverly High School, have partnered with Southeast Community College and the ESU 6 to bring students additional opportunities to learn about careers of interest to them through coursework, hands-on opportunities, and field experiences.

What careers areas are available through the Academy partnership?
Health occupations and education occupations – these were selected based on employment forecasts that show a huge demand in the future for knowledgeable, skilled employees in these rewarding career areas.

Who is eligible to participate in the career academy?
Any junior or senior interested in pursuing a career or further education at the post-secondary level in the areas of health or education can participate. Any student who is interested in a relevant and exciting educational experience that allows him/her to gain a head start in pursuing a career in health or education should seriously consider participating.  (Each student may only participate in one academy.)

How will an academy fit in a student’s schedule?
Currently, students are only being scheduled in the academy fall course offerings  – spring academy offerings will be arranged with students at a later time.  Students must devote two class periods in the fall to the Career Academy because the Career Academy will run daily for 90 minutes – using both 4th and 5th periods (with the exception of Medical Terminology I which is an on-line course).
On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, academy students will work on the introductory course at the high school through internet-based assignments and through portfolio development.  On Tuesday and Thursday, students will travel to an off-site location in Lincoln for class.  Health occupation students will go to Bryan-LGH and education occupation students will go to SCC’s Lincoln Campus. Students will be scheduled for an early lunch in order to attend class at noon in Lincoln.  They will return to the high school by 2:00 PM for 6th period.

How will students get to the off-site location?
Each student is responsible for his/her own transportation.

Can students earn college credit?  What is the expense of the course?
The Introduction to Health Careers course is for high school credit only (10 credits) – therefore, there is no fee for this course.  The Introduction to Education course is a dual credit course (10 high school credits and 3 college credits) – therefore, students will pay tuition to SCC (rate to be determined). The Medical Terminology I course is for 2 college credits only and tuition must be paid directly to SCC.
Tuition assistance may be awarded through need-based scholarships to students who may have difficulty paying for tuition.
