Cultural Participation and Research Ideas & Possible Points



IF YOU LIKE MUSIC:
    •     Memorize a song in Spanish. Perform and/or teach it.(could be lip-sync or recorded) Turn in lyrics in Spanish and English and any background information. 5-20
    •     Learn to play a Spanish musical composition on your guitar (or other instrument). Perform it. (Submit a paper on that composer;s life and work to add 10 points.) 5-20
    •     Attend a concert or performance. 10-20
    •     Learn a dance (flamenco, folk dance, etc.) and teach it to the class. 10-25
    •     Create and perform an original school appropriate song, rap, play, puppet show in Spanish. Get detailed information from your teacher. (solo or group of up to 4 people) 10-30

IF YOU LIKE TO COOK OR EAT (THESE ACTIVITIES INCLUDE CLEAN-UP):
    •     Taste chicharrones. Get a witness signature. Report your reactions to the class. 5
    •     Learn how to make tortillas (Spanish or Mexican version) 10
    •     Go to a Mexican grocery store where they have a bakery and speak Spanish. Buy panecillos, rosquitas, or other items. Order in Spanish and ask for a signature on your receipt. 10-15
    •     Learn how to make homemade salsa. 10-15
    •     Make gazpacho or empañadas (or other recipes). Bring mini samples for the class. 10-20
    •     Prepare Mexican chocolate and Spanish chocolate for your family / friends. Have them compare which they prefer. 10-20
    •     Collect labels from Hispanic food products (or non-food products) with bilingual labels and make a collage. 10-20
    •     Go to a Spanish/Mexican restaurant or café (make sure the owner or server speaks Spanish so you can talk to him/her). Ask and order in Spanish. Record your conversation in your ACR report. Have the camarero/a sign the menu or note. 15-20
    •     Research what a typical dinner in Spain vs. Mexico vs. another Spanish-speaking country would be. Make at least two items for your family. Include recipes in ACR. 15-30
    •     Create an evening in Mexico for you family. (authentic recipes, music, decorations) Pictures make great evidence! 20-30

If you wish to bring any food into the classroom, you must okay it with the teacher one week in advance!


IF YOU LIKE ART and/or CRAFTS or HISTORY:
    •     Reproduce a famous painting. 5-20
    •     Create folk art. 5-20
    •     Get instructions for playing the ancient Aztec and Spanish games. Demonstrate for the class. React. 5-20
    •     Make a flag (large; must be cloth material ) from any Spanish-speaking country. Explain what the colors/ emblems symbolize. 10-20
    •     Make a map of Spain or other Spanish-speaking countries or regions focusing on a special topic such as food, products, costumes, clothing, or … 10-20
    •     Imitate a famous artists’ style in an original work  and write a short report about the person. 10-20
    •     Make a poster about a famous Spanish-speaking person (artist, scientist, politician, historic person, athlete, etc) Include a short biography, highlights of career, and technique if applicable. (photocopied/printed encyclopedia or internet articles are unacceptable) 10-20
    •     On a U.S. map, find where concentrations of cities that have Spanish names are. Make a small map with the names. Include translations. 10-20
    •     Design a U.S. / Spain history timeline showing when and where the histories of the two countries connect. 10-20
    •     Visit the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha (or other art museum) and document Spanish/ Hispanic artists on display giving titles of works and writing your reactions to them. 10-20
    •     Build a diorama (shoebox display in 3-D) of an Hispanic capital. 10-20
    •     Decorate a T-shirt, canvas bag, etc. in the style of an Hispanic artist. Give a brief explanation of your interpretation of the style of the artist you chose. 10-20
    •     Build a 3-D replica of a famous building / monument from a Spanish-speaking country. Create a museum-type display. Bring it to class, photograph it or videotape it with a description. 15-25
    •     Study ancient art and write a detailed report citing sources. 10-30
    •     Create a professional quality visual and textual presentation to display in the                 library. The topic may be an aspect of any Hispanic country. Try to                             correspond it with a special Hispanic celebration. 10-30
    •     Sew a regional or historic Hispanic outfit. (size and detail affect points, consult             teacher) 25-40
    •     Follow the news about one Spanish-speaking country for a minimum of 3                 weeks. Make a collage and write a summary of the information. 15-25
    •     Research a current issue in an Hispanic country. Analyze the Hispanic point             of view. Document sources. 15-20


IF YOU LIKE TO READ OR WRITE:
    •     Read a Spanish language article and circle cognates. List cognates and their                 meanings. 5-10
    •     Read a children’s book in Spanish and critique it. 5-10
          Read a comic book in Spanish. Write a summary. 10-15
    •     Read a novel about a Spanish topic or person and share it with the class.                     10-15
    •     Research a leader (head of state) of a Spanish-speaking country and write a                 report. 10-15
    •     Read a Spanish magazine/ newspaper.   Select an article and summarize it.                 Make sure to include the item as evidence! 10-20
   Read a Spanish novel or play (in translation for lower levels). Write a                         summary. 15 - 25

Remember:  Make sure to include the item as evidence!



IF YOU LIKE T.V., MOVIES, OR PERFORMING ARTS:
    •     Watch a soccer game in Spanish. 5
    •     Watch Dora the Explorer (or other cartoon with Spanish), list main characters             and at least 10 Spanish words used on the show, including the English                     equivalent. 5-10
    •     Watch the movie 1492. 10
    •     Watch a movie on an Hispanic topic and describe it.
            (It can't be one you've seen in another class.)  10
    •     Watch a Spanish language movie and summarize the plot. 10-15
    •     Go see a Spanish play (classical or modern) and summarize the plot. 10-20
    •     Watch the news in Spanish, list 10 words you understood, and write up                     your impressions or reactions to the program. 10-15


IF YOU CAN TRAVEL OR LIKE TO GO SHOPPING:
    •     Write or email to a travel office in Spain, Mexico, etc. for some travel info. 10
    •     Visit a record store that carries Latin music and listen to various artists. Note who they are and critique their music. 10-15
    •     Visit Ten Thousand Villages store in Lincoln. Note which Spanish-speaking countries supply products, what they are, and what they’re made of. Get a brochure. 10-15
    •     Go to "La Mexicana" grocery store (or other) in Lincoln. Describe and make a list of foods that are new to you. Speak to the owners/clerks in Spanish; record your conversation in your ACR.  10-15
    •     Go to the Hispanic Center in Lincoln. Find out the activities or services they provide. Get a signature. 10-15
    •     Get a copy of Hispanos Unidos (newspaper).  Study the grocery ads. Compare items offered to those in an English ad for the same store. 10-15
    •     Go to El Museo Latino in Omaha (25th and L St.). Write up observations. 10-20
    •     Participate in an Hispanic Festival. (Lincoln/ Omaha, etc) 10-20
    •     Go to Mexico or other Spanish-speaking country. Keep a journal of your trip. (Must be done while taking Spanish.) 25-40


IF YOU WANT TO PRACTICE YOUR SPANISH:
    •     Help translate for someone who doesn’t speak English. (Repeated help earns more points.) 5-10
    •     Interview a native Spanish-speaking friend/ relative. Tape (or video) record the interview. 5-20
    •     Memorize and recite a Spanish-language poem (may be videotaped). 5-20
    •     Write and send a pen-pal letter to someone outside of WHS in Spanish. Turn in copies of all correspondence. Email is acceptable.  5 - 10
    •     Write to the Spanish Embassy for information. Include your letter with the information received. (Allow at least 10 weeks.) 10
    •     Use Spanish in your job or activity. Keep a log of what you say most often in a three week period. 10-15
    •     Attend a church service in Spanish. 10-15
    •     Write two letters to someone who is also enrolled in Spanish and receive two in return from that person (en Español, claro). No fair writing notes in class! Turn in copies of all correspondence. 10-15
    •     Arrange for a guest speaker for your class. Write 10 questions for the class to ask your guest.  Please notify la profesora one week in advance. 10-20
    •     Create a children’s book or coloring book in Spanish focusing on an hispanic cultural theme.  10-25
    •     Create a chapter of a math book for Spanish students. Get detail sheet from teacher. 10-25
    •     Become a Spanish tutor for another student for three weeks, two times per week minimum. Turn in a log of your meetings and lesson plans and quizzes/ assignments your tutee completes. 20-30
    •     Listen to Maquina Musical 97.7 FM or other Spanish language radio stations for at least 30 minutes on 4 different dates. Discuss the program format. Give your reaction and write words/phrases you understood. 10-15

*Keep in mind that you can come up with a project on your own. Just make sure you okay it before actually turning it in.  Remember only ONE project will be graded within a week of the deadline for each quarter.
