State Writing Test
All 8th graders in the state of Nebraska are required to take
the State Writing Exam in February. At this level, students are
given two class periods on consecutive days to write a descriptive
essay. Their topic for the essay (their prompt) is determined at
the state level and is the same for all students taking the exam. Because the 8th grade focus is on
descriptive writing, we spend much of the year working on this type of
writing. This study includes learning about and practicing the
use of:
- all 6 traits of writing (fluency, voice, conventions, organization, ideas, and word choice)
- parts of speech and correct punctuation
- description using the senses and adequate detail
If you are interested in knowing more about how these exams are evaluated, please see the State's Scoring Rubric in front of your student's assignment notebook.
