Course Description:
Students will demonstrate an understanding of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The Language Network and English to Learn textbooks will support the instruction. In addition, students will keep an organized binder that communicates their learning. The elements of literature and literature classification will be essential pieces of our learning. Students will also work through a daily oral language exercise. The student's daily effort and motivation will play an important role in the grade they earn for the semester.
Objectives: Each student will be expected to meet the following: 1) listen critically and respectfully in a variety of settings 2) follow verbal directions 3) demonstrate ability to listen actively for longer period of times 4) determine the speaker's purpose, main idea, organization of ideas, and supporting information to understand a presentation 5) focus on the message, not the manner of delivery 6) think critically when listening to the popular media
Grading Protocol: Grades will be determined by student performance in each of the following: Course Requirements Percent 1) Summative Assessment : 75% * Vocabulary Quizzes * Parts of Speech Quizzes * Papers and Projects 2) Formative Assessments: Section Tests 15% 3) Semester Final 10%
Grading Policy: For student work that is not submitted on time, a "DND" (Did Not Do) will be entered in the grade-book, which will result in an "Incomplete". DND school will be from 8-8:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students will have exactly 1 week to complete work to receive full credit. Then if the work isn’t turned in after 1 week has passed, the student will be referred to the office and parents will be contacted. The student will have 3 weeks to complete the work following a semester grade period. There will be no retakes without an initial take. Students must meet with me prior to retaking and revisit material. Retakes may be given in an alternate format such as an oral presentation or interview. If a student decides to retake, they may receive no more than the average of the two grades. Homework will always be checked, but a grade will not always go in the grade-book. Students may retake a A minimum of 6 grades will be recorded each quarter.
