Class Outline
Course Description
Speech is a semester long class that is required for high school
students. The purpose of the course is to teach students about
public speaking. Since public speaking situations occur in a
variety of real-life contexts, the basics of public speaking will
include: topic selection, audience analysis, research, outlining,
and speech writing. Students will be assessed on basic public
speaking skills as designated by District #145 and the State Department
of Education.
Class Objectives:
- To increase students' understanding of the communication process within the context of public speaking.
- To increase students' awareness and understanding of the roles of verbal and nonverbal communication in speech presentations.
- To increase students' understanding of the many contexts and forms in which public speaking occurs in our society.
- To increase students' understanding of the importance of analyzing
the audience in selecting, developing, and presenting a topic.
- To increase students' understanding of the purposes of public
speeches - to inform, to entertain, to persuade, and presenting a topic.
- To increase students' ability to evaluate the strengths and
weaknesses of others' speeches through the study of model speeches and
through evaluations of classmates' speeches.
-To increase students' ability to evaluate their own performance.
-To improve students' self-esteem through successful communication experiences.
Rules and Expectations
Come to class prepared - notebook, pen or pencil, reading book
Participate in discussions and activities
Do your own work - use class time
Listen to instructions
Use computer lab time for class assignments
Do not delete any writing files. Save all class work.
