Exploring German
Grade 8
Exploring German is a nine week elective that offers the student an exciting introduction to the German language and culture.
The objectives of Exploring German are:
1. to introduce the student to current examples of everyday speech in a realistic way.
2. to allow the student to practice these examples through a variety of interesting, functional exercises.
3. to introduce the student to everyday life and to provide a
taste of art, music and literature of German-speaking countries, which
form part of the greater cultural heritage shared by all the peoples of
the world.
4. to help the student to understand and appreciate his/her own language by relating it to German.
Unit Objectives
1. Greetings and Courtesy - students will be able to ask and give
personal information, and interact courteously with others.
2. Classroom Objects - students will be able to identify classroom objects.
3. Classroom Commands - students will be able to follow classroom
commands , and direct others by using classroom commands.
4. Numbers - students will be able to count, perform basic
mathematical functions, relate numbers to geometric figuers, and
comprehend numbers in a buisness setting.
5. Geography - students will be able to realize where he/she is
in relation to the target language countries and continents, locate
cities and geographical features on a map, and recognize the influence
of geography on economy.
6. House - students will be able to describe the house in terms of its rooms, and identify different types of lodging.
7. Family - students will be able to identify family members and
their relationships to one another and his/her relationship to them.
8. Time and Colors - students will be able to tell time,
understand official (railroad, military) time, identify colors, and
describe objects in terms of colot.
9. Days and Months - students will be able to identify days of
the week and months of the year, relate months to seasons, distinguish
work days from holidays, identify the mythological origin of the
weekdays, and write dates in the target language.
Grading
Students will be graded on:
Daily work
Quizzes
Tests
Class Expectations
Students are to come prepared to class.
Students to be on time for class.
Students are to listen attentively in class.
Students are participate in class exercises and practice pronunciation of German language.
Students are to complete assignments on time and with effort.
Students are to respect others.
Consequences for not meeting class expectations may include:
teacher conference
after school or lunch detention
RTA referral
parental contact
an office referral
