5th Grade Activities
Waverly Intermediate School fifth graders went on their first field trip of the year on Friday, September 28. We visited Aksarben Aquarium and Schramm State Park for a day of indoor and outdoor activities.
Our first stop was the Aksarben Aquarium. While there we watched a video in the auditorium about animal adaptations. After the video each student was given a clipboard and crossword puzzle. As we toured the aquarium we read the crossword clues and looked for answers hidden in the various displays. We found what we needed in the hands-on classroom display area and on signs around the terrarium and tanks containing many kinds of Nebraska fish.
After about an hour in the aquarium building we were ready for lunch. We ate our sack lunches in the picnic area near the fish ponds. It was a beautiful day for a picnic! Some Canada geese and other water fowl were enjoying the ponds while we were there. The ponds are full of huge fish, too.
After finishing our sack lunches we started out on our trail hike. The trail we followed winds through woods, over a suspension bridge, and past creeks and ponds. As we walked we looked for evidence of wildlife in the area and enjoyed the early fall foliage.
By the time we got back to the picnic area we were ready to board the buses and head back to school. It was a great day and we thank all the parents that went along with us to help supervise.
